Path of the Black Flag- Shaman

Shamen represent an older, more primal way of life, often at odds with current kingdoms, and at the same time with ‘traditional’ tribal societies. This conservatism often, ironically, lends itself to Anarchy. The Anarchist shamen archetype is the New Primordial. New Primordials are a variety of ‘urban shamen’, people from civilization who long to shrug off the trappings of modernity and reconnect with what they think is the more authentic life of the Shamen.

There is also a new spirit for Shamen: The Spirit of Freedom. New Primordials are not required to take this spirit, and Shamen who do take it are not required to be Anarchists. However, most Shamen who do take it are Anarchists.

Alternate Class Abilities

Skills– A New Primodial does not gain Handle Animal (Cha), Knowledge(nature) (Int), or Survival (Wis) as class skills; instead, she gains Diplomacy (Cha), Knowledge (local) (Int), Knowledge (nobility) (Int),Linguistics (Int), and Profession (Wis) as class skills.

Body Modification Enthusiast- New Primordials gain Body Modification Enthusiast as a bonus feat.

Unfetter– With a quick incantation, everyone within a 30’ radius of the Shaman gains a +10 divine bonus to their Disable Device and Escape Artist skill checks, and to their Combat Maneuver Bonus (CMB) and Combat Maneuver Defense (CMD) for the purpose of either avoiding or getting out of a grappled condition. This bonus is available to all within the radius of the spell, although the Shaman may restrict from certain individuals as a free action. At 4th level, and every 4 levels after that, the radius of the hex increases by 5’. This can be a number of times per day equal to 3 plus the Shaman’s Wisdom bonus.

Unclouded Sight– Your knowledge of the illegitimacy of hierarchy and how those in power deceive people allows you to see things as they truly are. You gain a +4 divine bonus to Sense Motive skill checks. At 10th level, this hex function as if using the true seeing spell. At 15th level, this functions like moment of prescience. At 18th level, this functions like foresight. You can use this ability for a number of minutes per day equal to your Shaman level, but these minutes do not need to be consecutive.

Unshackled Mind– The Shaman has a +4 divine bonus against saves versus all mind-affecting enchantments and fear effects. A number of allies equal to the Shaman’s level gains a +2 divine bonus against all enchantments and fear effects. Bestowing this bonus is a free action for the Shaman. Starting at 1st level, an oracle can touch someone under the influence of an mind-affecting enchantment or fear effect once per day. Upon that touch, the target gets another saving throw against the effect, with the oracle’s divine bonus of +4. At 4th level, and every four levels after that, the oracle can do this touch an additional time per day.

Aura of Disobedience– The Shaman can, as a free action, apply a penalty to any attempt at diplomacy or intimidation, the amount of the penalty equal to her level. Once per day for every level the oracle has, she can attempt to negatively influence the attitude of a groups of people within a 60’ radius of her toward the authority figures of those people. To do this, she attempts an diplomacy skill check, adding her level to the roll. Upon a successful roll, the attitude of the crowd towards any and all authorities worsens by one level. If she succeeds by 5 or more, she worsens the attitude by two levels. This is a standard action.

Anarchic Infusion– The Shaman may give a weapon she is holding the Anarchic special ability. The Shaman may only give this ability to one weapon at a time, and only to a weapon she is holding. If she drops or puts down the weapon, it no longer has the ability. The Shaman may use this ability a number of rounds per day equal to her level. The rounds do not have to be consecutive.

Spirit Animal

The Shaman’s spirit animal is a wilder, rougher, more vigorous specimen than normal. Apply the Primitive template to it. The animal is under the constant effect of a Protection from Law spell, with a caster level equal to the Shaman’s level.

Spirit Ability

Temporary Autonomous Zone– The shaman may cast Protection from Law, as a standard action, upon herself. A 4th level, the Shaman may instead cast Communal Protection from Law, as the standard spell. At 6th level, the Shaman may cast Magic Circle Against Law. A shaman can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Charisma modifier.

Greater Spirit Ability

Embody Freedom– The Shaman may cast Beast Shape I upon herself twice per day, with a caster level equal to her Shaman level. At 10th level, she may cast Beast Shape II. At 12th level, she may cast Beast Shape III. And at 14th level, she may cast Beast Shape IV.

True Spirit Ability

Proclaim Freedom– The Shaman may cast Word of Chaos, once per day, with a caster level equal to the Shaman’s level.


At 20th level, the Shaman becomes a true spirit of freedom. The range and duration of all her spirit abilities (although her normal Shaman spells) is doubled. She is constantly under the effects of Endure Elements, has a 10 resistance to all energy, and a spell resistance of 20 against all Lawful spells.
